Operations

The Town treats a raw water supply that dominantly comes from Mosquito Creek and is pumped throughout the year into a storage reservoir for that purpose. Nanton has not been dominantly supplied by groundwater sources since about 1980. The distribution system's age varies throughout Town, with some areas needing more attention than others. Leak detection is currently a major priority for the utility as many breaks do not come to surface.  Please read the page on water conservation for more.

There is 19.5 kilometers of underground collection pipe in the town. It takes wastewater to the treatment plant. The water is then treated. Once the water is treated, which meets all government requirements, it is released into Mosquito Creek. 

Nanton is served by an MBR Wastewater treatment plant, completed in 2017.  Further work will be done on the plant from 2024.

Roads

The Public Works Department is responsible for the maintenance and repair of the town’s roads, sidewalks, alleyways, and walkways. These responsibilities includes:

• Snow and ice control
• Street sweeping
• Alley grading 
• Line painting 
• Crack and pothole filling 
• Sidewalk repair and maintenance

Nanton is fortunate enough to be built on varied topography which facilitates good drainage of stormwater.  Where necessary, 5.8 kms of underground stormwater management is in place to assist drainage. The water is carried to wet ponds (Westview Park, Lions' Grove Park, etc).

It is important for everyone to understand that winter recreational activities on stormwater ponds is not safe due to pockets of poor ice quality.   It prohibited in the Town of Nanton.
