POSITION TITLE: Deputy Returning Officer (DRO)
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer is responsible for administering the voting process at a designated voting station in accordance with the Local Authorities Election Act (LAEA), ensuring the election is conducted fairly, securely, and efficiently.
GENERAL DUTIES
- Set up and organize the voting station prior to opening.
- Verify voter eligibility and issue ballots in compliance with the LAEA.
- Provide clear instructions to voters on the proper voting process.
- Monitor the ballot box to ensure ballots are properly deposited.
- Maintain order at the voting station and address voter questions or concerns professionally.
- Safeguard ballots, election materials, and voter privacy at all times.
- Complete all required forms and documentation accurately.
- Count ballots and record results under the supervision of the Presiding Deputy Returning Officer (PDRO).
- Assist with the closing and secure return of all election materials.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in following procedures.
- Ability to maintain impartiality, confidentiality, and professionalism at all times.
- Excellent communication and customer service skills for interacting with voters.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills for completing forms and counting ballots.
- Availability to work extended hours on election day.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
- Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
- Attendance at a mandatory training workshop (date TBD) is required.
