Water Colour, Taste and Odour

The Town of Nanton is committed to providing high-quality drinking water that is both safe and pleasant to consume. We continually monitor the water supply and take proactive steps to enhance its quality, including addressing concerns related to taste, odor, and color.

Recently, there have been concerns about an unpleasant taste and odor in the municipal water supply. After conducting additional testing, we have confirmed that the cause of these issues is the presence of geosmin, a naturally occurring compound. Geosmin is produced by algae blooms in the reservoir, which can occur during warmer weather. The geosmin detection threshold for humans is very low, and even small amounts can produce a musty, earthy taste and odor in the water. While geosmin can be unpleasant, it is important to note that it is not harmful to human health, and the water remains safe to drink.

The Town of Nanton has taken immediate steps to mitigate the impact of geosmin on water quality. Increased activated carbon filtration has been implemented to help reduce the taste and smell. Additionally, the cooler weather has contributed to a decrease in the intensity of the odor. For residents who continue to notice the taste or odor, placing water in the refrigerator can help alleviate the issue. The Town’s Operations Department is actively working to address these challenges and improve the overall water quality.  If you would like to view the Town of Nanton's water tests please visit the Alberta EPEA Website.

In addition to ongoing efforts to address taste and odor concerns, the Town has made significant investments in improving water quality. In 2019, the reservoir was dredged, leading to improvements in taste and odor. More recently, in 2023, the municipality invested $1.3 million to install improved aeration and powder-activated carbon filtration, which are expected to further enhance water quality and potentially reduce chlorination requirements.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our residents as we continue working to ensure that Nanton’s water supply remains both safe and of the highest quality. For any further questions or concerns, please contact the Town office at 403-646-2029.
