Previous Public Engagement

Public engagement has been an important part of developing the Northwest Area Structure Plan (ASP). Throughout the planning process, the Town of Nanton has provided opportunities for residents, landowners and interested parties to share their ideas, priorities and concerns about future development in northwest Nanton.

Initial Consultation and Visioning Sessions – 2025

The planning process began with separate visioning sessions involving landowners within the plan area and Town Council. These sessions provided an opportunity to discuss expectations for future growth, potential land uses and infrastructure considerations.

The Oldman River Regional Services Commission (ORRSC), the Town's planning agency and author of the ASP, used the information gathered to help develop preliminary land use concepts for the area.

Public Survey – Closed June 1, 2025

An online public survey provided residents and interested parties with an opportunity to share their thoughts on future development in northwest Nanton.

Feedback helped identify community priorities, including maintaining Nanton's small-town character, providing appropriate housing options, preserving green spaces, improving connectivity and ensuring infrastructure can support future growth.

Public Open House – June 18, 2025

The Town hosted a public open house on June 18, 2025, to present preliminary land use concepts and gather additional feedback.

The event was well attended, with residents, landowners and other interested individuals sharing their perspectives on the proposed layouts. Much of the feedback received indicated a preference for elements of Concept 3.

Comments and discussions from the open house, together with the survey results and earlier consultation, helped inform the next stage of planning.

Council Selects Preferred Concept – August 11, 2025

At the August 11, 2025 Regular Council Meeting, Council selected Concept 3 as the preferred layout to guide the preparation of the draft Northwest Area Structure Plan.

This decision provided direction for the development of the planning document but did not constitute final approval of the ASP or any future development.

Council also acknowledged that revisions to the preferred concept could be made during subsequent stages of planning, including adjustments to proposed Municipal Reserve (green space) to align with subdivision regulations.

August 2025 Engagement Summary

An engagement summary was prepared to document the feedback received through the public consultation process. The report provides an overview of community participation, the land use concepts presented and the input that helped guide Council's selection of a preferred concept.

What's Next? – October 2026

Building on the feedback received in 2025, the draft Northwest Area Structure Plan has now been prepared and is available for public review.

The Town will host another Public Open House on October 29, 2026, from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Tom Hornecker Recreation Centre Curling Lounge. This will provide an opportunity to review the draft plan, speak with the planning team, ask questions and share comments before the document is brought forward to Council.

Feedback on the draft ASP will be accepted until November 9, 2026. All feedback received during this stage will be provided to Council for consideration as the plan moves toward the formal bylaw adoption process.
