Road Maintenance

Street sweeping will run from the middle of May (weather permitting) until the middle of June to clear all the sand, dirt and rock chips left on the streets from the winter season. The town has rented a street sweeper again this year to sweep in neighborhoods, Monday to Friday from 8 am to 6 pm 

Signs will be placed in your area before street sweeping is scheduled in your specific neighborhood. It takes sweepers approximately one to three weeks to clear residential roads.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR SWEEPING IN YOUR AREA

• Watch for signs with dates for sweeping in your area. These are posted at least 24 hours in advance.
• Move any parked cars. 
• Sweep any dirt or debris on your driveway or sidewalk into the gutter in advance.
• Remove rubber driveway mats and any other on-street obstructions. 
• Do not park on the street until the signs at the neighborhood entrances have been removed.

Potholes and other road hazards can develop quickly, especially after winter or heavy rain. The Town of Nanton is committed to timely repairs to keep roads safe for all users.

If you notice a pothole, damaged pavement, or any other road-related concern, please report it directly to the Town so our Public Works team can address it as quickly as possible.

Cracksealing is one form of preventive pavement maintenance that helps ensure the consistent operation of the Town’s roadways.  Pavement cracks develop due to expansion and contraction caused by temperature fluctuation. These cracks allow water to penetrate the pavement base and sub-base materials, causing pavement elements to lose structural integrity. If not repaired or prevented, this cracking effect will grow, leading to deformation of the pavement, potholes, and ultimately the degradation of asphalt and concrete surfaces. 

Prior to our cold-pour tar compound being applied to any roads, signs are installed advising motorists of wet tar on the roadway.  Motorists are strongly encouraged to drive slowly along these routes to avoid getting tar on their vehicles.  Property owners may wish to initially avoid driving onto their driveways in areas where tar has been applied to avoid tracking.  The cold pour tar takes approximately 30 minutes to harden once it has been applied to the road surface. 

Road (Line) painting occurs regularly on our transportation networks.  Major road painting applications are typically scheduled throughout the summer months. 

We ask motorists to obey all signage around road-painting areas and to drive slowly around our workers when they are engaged in road-painting activities.  Please stay back from the line painting operations and avoid driving over fresh-looking paint.

What if I drive over the paint and it gets on my car?

Although the Town places signs indicating fresh paint on a roadway, sometimes a driver may accidentally drive through it, getting paint on their car. If this happens, as soon as possible after getting paint from road stripes on the vehicle, wash the vehicle at a pressure car wash. 

• Act Fast: Wash your vehicle at a pressure car wash as soon as possible.
• For Dried Paint: Spray the residue with WD-40, wait 1–2 hours, and rewash.
• For Heavy Build-up: Apply a thick layer of Vaseline, leave it overnight, and pressure wash.
• Wheel Wells: Apply Vaseline for several days, pressure wash, and use rubbing alcohol on a soft sponge to remove any remaining residue.
• Final Touch: Apply a fresh coat of wax once the paint is removed.

Important: Never scrub the vehicle or use harsh solvents, as this will damage the finish.

The Town of Nanton maintains a network of gravel roads and back lanes throughout the community. Regular grading, dust control, and gravel replenishment help keep these roads safe and accessible for residents and emergency services.

What residents should know:

• Gravel roads may develop ruts, potholes, or washboarding over time, especially after heavy rain or snowmelt.
• Back lanes are graded periodically, but residents should exercise caution during and shortly after maintenance activities.
• The Town strives to schedule grading and gravel placement during dry conditions whenever possible for the best results.

If you notice issues with a gravel road or back lane, please report it to the Town so maintenance crews can address it promptly.

Based on available annual budgets, the Transportation team assesses our concrete (sidewalk and curb and gutter) infrastructure and prioritizes our concrete replacement programs based on needs and assessments.  Hazardous concrete is marked for replacement first as well as concrete in need of replacement due to earlier utility work in a particular location.  Sidewalk and curb repairs typically occur during the summer and fall months.  Pedestrians should use caution when traversing by areas where sidewalks have been removed and replaced.  Any immediately affected businesses or residents will be notified prior to concrete repair work proceeding. 

There are 2,941 streetlights within the Town of Okotoks.  With the exception of the decorative lights in the downtown district, all streetlights within the Town of Okotoks are maintained by Fortis Alberta.  From time to time, our streetlights can malfunction. The most common malfunction we see are:

• lights staying on continuously
• lights flicker on and off
• lights do not work at all
