Curbside Recycling

Extended Producer Responsibility, or EPR, is an Alberta-wide recycling system that makes the companies that supply packaging and paper products responsible for funding and managing the recycling of those materials.

The goal is to shift the financial and operational responsibility for designated residential recycling away from municipalities and taxpayers and to the producers of those materials.

No. Nanton already has an established curbside recycling program.

The transition to EPR changes how the recycling system is managed and funded, but residents will continue to receive curbside recycling service much as they do today.

No. Continue using your existing recycling bin and following Nanton's regular collection schedule.

The main change residents will see beginning October 1, 2026 is an expanded list of materials that can be placed in residential recycling.

T&T Disposal will continue to collect recycling in Nanton. There is no change to who picks up your recycling.

As part of Phase 2 beginning October 1, 2026, Circular Materials will manage the residential recycling program and work with T&T Disposal to continue providing curbside collection in Nanton.

No. Residents will continue to use their existing recycling bins.

There is no need to exchange your bin or obtain a new one as part of the EPR transition.

There are no changes to Nanton’s recycling collection schedule as a result of this transition at this time.

Residents should continue putting their recycling out as usual.

Yes. Beginning October 1, 2026, the list of materials accepted through Alberta's residential recycling program will expand.

Additional materials will include items such as certain flexible plastic packaging, foam packaging, empty aerosol containers, laminated paper and plastic packaging, and other designated materials.

No. Yard waste is not part of Alberta's EPR program.

The Town will continue to provide and fund services for materials that fall outside the EPR system, including yard waste.

Changes to the current recycling fee are anticipated.

Residents currently pay $7 per month for recycling and related services, which also supports services that are not covered by EPR, including yard waste.

While EPR will change how certain residential recycling costs are funded, the Town will continue to have costs associated with yard waste and other services outside the provincial program.

Any adjustments to the monthly fee will be considered through the Town’s upcoming budget process, with further information provided once finalized.

Circular Materials is a national not-for-profit organization that works on behalf of producers to administer recycling programs under Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), including Alberta’s EPR program.

Phase 2 of Alberta’s EPR program begins October 1, 2026, expanding the program to additional communities and recyclable materials.
